Embracing Singleness: God’s Divine Blueprint for the Christian Woman Preparing for Marriage
For many Christian women, the season of singleness can be a complex journey – filled with anticipation, personal growth, and often, a deep longing for partnership. Today, I want to share profound lessons the Lord has impressed upon my heart over the years regarding this sacred time, especially for those who desire to eventually enter into a God-honoring marriage. First and foremost, let’s be unequivocally clear: there is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with desiring marriage. In fact, it’s a desire woven into the fabric of humanity by our Creator. God Himself declared in Genesis 2:18, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” This statement is remarkably significant, as it’s the first time we encounter the phrase “not good” in the biblical narrative, following His pronouncements of everything else being “good” or “very good.” This highlights God’s original design for companionship and union.
This message has been stirring within me for a long time, much like a precious seed growing and forming, waiting for its appointed time to be delivered. My prayer is that these insights will resonate deeply with you, whether you are a single woman actively navigating this season, or simply seeking to understand God’s heart for relationships. We will explore timeless truths found in three pivotal biblical stories: the creation of Adam and Eve, the journey of Ruth, and the transformation of Esther. While this content is primarily for single women, I believe every reader will find valuable principles applicable to their own walk with God and understanding of His redemptive plan. So, settle in, open your heart, and let’s embark on this spiritual exploration together.
Lesson 1: The Indispensable Season of Divine Formation
One of the most foundational truths God reveals about preparing a woman for marriage is the concept of a “formation period.” This isn’t just about waiting; it’s about active, intentional preparation by God Himself. We see this powerful principle right from the very beginning, in the book of Genesis, chapter 2:
21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God MADE a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.
Did you notice the emphasis on the word “MADE”? The Hebrew word for “made” here, בָּנָה (banah), also carries the connotation of “built” or “fashioned.” God didn’t simply create Eve instantly from dust; He meticulously “built” her from Adam’s rib. This implies a deliberate, careful, and intentional process of shaping and forming. There is always a period where the Lord thoughtfully fashions a woman for her destined partner. He builds you up, molds your character, and shapes you into the divine design He intends for you to be. This profound process is what I refer to as “the formation period” – a time of becoming who God created you to be, independent of any marital status.
This principle of a preparatory period is beautifully echoed in the book of Esther, providing a vivid, albeit ancient, illustration:
Before a young woman’s turn came to go in to King Xerxes, she had to complete twelve months of BEAUTY TREATMENTS prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics. Esther 2:12
In Esther’s story, these “beauty treatments” were literal, physical preparations designed to adorn and beautify the women before they were presented to the king. While we acknowledge the vast differences between ancient Persian palace customs and God’s sacred design for Christian marriage, our focus here is on the underlying spiritual principle: the “beautifying period” that precedes meeting one’s “king” – the man God has prepared. For Esther, this intensive preparation took a full twelve months. For you, this period might be shorter or longer, depending on God’s unique timeline and the specific work He desires to accomplish in your life.
Beyond the Physical: Character, Values, and Heart Formation
In both the Genesis account of Eve and the historical narrative of Esther, the formation or beautifying process involved physical aspects. However, these physical preparations serve as powerful symbols for a much deeper, spiritual reality. They represent how the Lord meticulously shapes a woman’s character, clarifies her values, and prepares her heart before He brings her to the man He has chosen for her. This formation period is not merely about waiting; it’s about growing, learning, and transforming from the inside out.
If your desire is to enter into marriage God’s way, it is crucial to embrace and truly value this formation period. Do not underestimate its significance or try to rush through it. This is a divine appointment, a sacred time for spiritual development:
- A Time for Humility and Learning: The formation period is an invitation to cultivate a humble spirit, recognizing that God is the ultimate teacher. It’s a season to actively learn, to be teachable, and to submit to God’s pruning and molding process. This means embracing constructive feedback, seeking wisdom from mentors, and allowing God to reveal areas that need refinement.
- A Time to Dig Deep into God’s Word: Your singleness provides an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in Scripture. It’s a time to discover your identity in Christ, to understand God’s promises, and to internalize His truth. As you spend time in His Word, you will find yourself, your purpose, and your direction, rooted not in human relationships but in your relationship with your Creator. This builds a robust spiritual foundation essential for any future partnership.
- A Time to Work on Character and the Tongue: Character is not developed overnight; it is forged through intentional effort and reliance on the Holy Spirit. This period is vital for cultivating godly virtues such as patience, kindness, self-control, integrity, and resilience. Specifically, it’s a powerful time to refine your speech. Our words carry immense power, and learning to speak life, grace, and truth, rather than gossip, criticism, or complaint, is a vital preparation for a healthy marriage. A disciplined tongue reflects a disciplined heart, and this strength of character will serve you well in all relationships.
- A Time to Prepare Your Heart: Beyond character traits, God desires to prepare your heart. This involves addressing past hurts, forgiving those who have wronged you, releasing bitterness, and healing from any emotional wounds. It’s about cultivating a heart that is tender, forgiving, and open to receiving and giving love in a healthy, Christ-centered way. A prepared heart is one that is whole in Christ, not looking for a partner to complete it, but to complement it in shared purpose.
- A Time for Holistic Stewardship, Including Outward Appearance: While God unequivocally “looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7), this does not negate the importance of stewardship over our physical bodies and outward presentation. This period can also be a time to develop healthy habits, prioritize self-care, and present yourself in a way that honors God. It’s not about vanity, but about recognizing your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and presenting yourself with dignity and care, reflecting God’s order and beauty. A healthy exterior can often reflect a healthy internal disposition, demonstrating discipline and self-respect.
The formation period is ultimately about becoming a more complete and Christ-like individual, ready to bring your whole, sanctified self into a covenant relationship. It prepares you not just to find a good spouse, but to *be* a good spouse. It ensures that you enter marriage from a place of spiritual maturity and readiness, rather than desperation or unaddressed issues that could later hinder your union.
Next Tuesday, we will continue our journey by exploring another crucial aspect of God’s preparation for marriage: the vital role of mentorship, drawing invaluable lessons from the inspiring stories of Ruth and Esther.
