African Veggies American Soil My First Vlog

You guys, the moment I’ve been dreaming of for what feels like an eternity has finally arrived! I’ve launched my very first vlog, and I’m absolutely buzzing with excitement. After countless hours of wishing and planning, and a significant battle with procrastination (boo to that!), I can finally share a glimpse into one of my most cherished routines: my farmer’s market shopping experience. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you already know my deep affection for the farmer’s market. It’s more than just a place to buy produce; it’s a sanctuary where I genuinely feel at home, a vibrant hub of community and culture. And yes, for those who appreciate a good deal, it’s also where I get to practice my bargaining skills – or as I like to call it, “beating the price” or “pricing the market” (haha!).

My First Farmer’s Market Vlog: A Culinary Journey in St. Paul, Minnesota

Embarking on this vlogging adventure was a leap of faith, but one I’m incredibly glad I took. I’ve always wanted to bring you along on my trips to the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market here in picturesque Minnesota, a place that never ceases to amaze me with its incredible array of produce. It’s a treasure trove where you’ll discover vegetables you might genuinely believe are impossible to find in the heart of America. This market isn’t just a local staple; it’s a global pantry, offering a diverse selection that caters to and celebrates various culinary traditions. Each visit is an exploration, an opportunity to connect with growers and to uncover ingredients that evoke distant memories and inspire new dishes.

Discovering Saint Paul’s Vibrant Farmer’s Market: A Global Pantry in the Midwest

The atmosphere at the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market is simply electric. From the moment you step foot onto its bustling grounds, you’re enveloped in a symphony of sights, sounds, and smells. The air is alive with the chatter of vendors proudly displaying their harvests, the laughter of families strolling through the aisles, and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked goods and ripe produce. It’s an immersive experience that awakens all the senses. Rows upon rows of colorful fruits and vegetables are meticulously arranged, each stall a testament to the hard work and dedication of local farmers. Beyond the fresh produce, you’ll find artisanal cheeses, homemade jams, fragrant flowers, and so much more, creating a vibrant tapestry of local commerce and community spirit.

For me, the market is a deeply personal space. It’s where I can slow down, connect with the origins of my food, and engage in the timeless tradition of selecting the freshest ingredients directly from the source. The joy of negotiating prices, even for a few cents, adds a playful element to the shopping experience, making it feel less like a chore and more like a cherished ritual. It’s this unique blend of cultural immersion, community connection, and the thrill of discovery that makes the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market an absolutely essential stop for anyone living in or visiting Minnesota.

A Taste of Home: Unbelievable Finds in Minnesota’s Farmer’s Market

What truly sets the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market apart, particularly for someone with a diverse culinary background like mine, is its astonishing selection of produce that transcends typical American supermarket offerings. It’s a place where cultural culinary traditions are celebrated and sustained, allowing me to find ingredients that remind me of home and enable me to prepare authentic dishes.

  • Garden Egg (Njakatu): Imagine my delight when I first stumbled upon garden egg, affectionately known as “Njakatu” in Cameroon, my home country! These small, often white or green, slightly bitter eggplants are a staple in many African and Asian cuisines. They possess a unique texture and flavor that’s essential for dishes like hearty stews and flavorful soups. Finding them here, fresh and abundant, is a testament to the market’s incredible diversity and its ability to cater to a global palate. It’s not just an ingredient; it’s a piece of home, connecting me to my roots and the vibrant flavors of Cameroonian cooking. You can explore how I use them in dishes like garden egg (Njakatu) stew.
  • Garden Huckleberry (Njama Njama): Another extraordinary find that consistently brings a smile to my face is garden huckleberry, known as “Njama Njama.” These leafy greens are a powerhouse of nutrition and flavor, widely consumed across various African cultures. Their slightly bitter, earthy taste adds incredible depth to stews and side dishes. Cooking with Njama Njama instantly transports me back to the bustling markets of Cameroon, evoking memories of shared meals and family gatherings. It’s an ingredient that speaks volumes about cultural continuity and the incredible reach of diverse culinary traditions, right here in Minnesota. Learn more about cooking with them in my recipe for how to cook Njama Njama with Egusi.
  • Pumpkin Leaves: Beyond these truly unique items, the market also offers an abundance of fresh pumpkin leaves. These tender greens are incredibly versatile, packed with vitamins, and add a wonderful flavor and texture to soups, stews, and sautéed dishes. They are a beloved ingredient in many traditional cuisines, showcasing the market’s commitment to providing a wide array of options for adventurous cooks.
  • Lots of Fresh Herbs: And let’s not forget the incredible variety of fresh herbs! From cilantro and parsley to more exotic varieties, the market’s herb stalls are a fragrant paradise, offering everything needed to elevate any dish from good to gourmet.

They even have fresh corn – and I don’t mean the soft, sweet American corn you typically find in supermarkets. I’m talking about the hard, robust fresh corn that is a beloved staple in Africa. This variety has a distinct chewiness and a more earthy, less sugary flavor profile that is utterly nostalgic for me. It’s perfect for boiling, grilling, or incorporating into traditional African dishes, providing a texture and taste experience that is profoundly different from its American counterpart. It’s a small but significant detail that highlights the market’s commitment to culinary authenticity and diversity, and I absolutely adore it!

And at certain points in the season, we are blessed with the arrival of fresh groundnuts, or peanuts! While they haven’t been harvested yet and didn’t make it into this particular vlog, the anticipation for their arrival is always high. There’s something truly special about freshly dug groundnuts – their sweetness and crunch are unparalleled. Perhaps when the groundnuts are ready, I’ll be inspired to create another vlog dedicated entirely to this seasonal delight, showcasing how we enjoy them and sharing more about their cultural significance.

The Journey Behind the Lens: My First Vlogging Experience

Stepping in front of the camera, especially in a bustling public space like the farmer’s market, was an entirely new experience for me. I must admit, I was a little shy at first. There’s a peculiar feeling that comes with shopping for groceries while talking into a camera, aware of curious glances from passersby. It felt a little weird, a bit awkward, and definitely out of my comfort zone. However, as the filming progressed and I became more engrossed in the experience of sharing my market journey with you all, that initial shyness began to melt away. The sheer joy of documenting this beloved routine, of creating something new and engaging, quickly outweighed any self-consciousness. Ultimately, the entire vlogging process was incredibly enjoyable and immensely rewarding, a truly memorable first-time experience.

First vlog at the Saint Paul Farmer's Market, showcasing diverse produce and a family outing.

None of this would have been possible without my wonderful sweetheart, Mr. N, who served as my dedicated cameraman for this debut vlog. He has always been an incredible source of support for everything I do, a true partner in every sense of the word. I still chuckle recalling when he wanted to marry me and I famously (or infamously!) said, “our ministries don’t match.” Little did I know how perfectly aligned our lives would become! Mr. N truly outdid himself, doing an excellent job capturing me shopping with the girls, and he did it with such passion and enthusiasm. His encouragement and skillful filming made the entire process so much smoother and more enjoyable than I could have imagined.

The day itself was a perfect blend of productive shopping and family fun. The Minnesota sun was scorching, making our market stroll quite warm, but just when we needed it most, an “ice cream sun” seemed to appear! This was our cue to treat the girls (and ourselves!) to some delicious ice cream, a delightful way to cool off and recharge. These spontaneous moments are what make family outings so special and memorable. Watching the girls enjoy their treats, their faces lit up with joy, added another layer of happiness to an already fantastic day. It truly was a fun first-time experience for all of us, filled with discovery, laughter, and a bit of delicious relief from the heat. You’ll definitely want to watch the vlog to see all the candid moments and how our entire market adventure unfolded!
