Earlier this year, my family and I embarked on an exciting journey to Nashville, Tennessee. This marked our inaugural visit to a Southern state, and what an incredible experience it was! We immersed ourselves in the vibrant culture of Music City for eight unforgettable days, breathing new air, exploring a captivating new urban landscape, and savoring an array of distinctive Southern culinary delights.

While I often post delicious recipes, it’s been a while since I penned a narrative piece like this, and I’m genuinely thrilled to recount our latest family escapade. Packing our bags and leaving the familiar sunshine of Southern California for the bustling streets of Nashville felt like a fresh start, a true adventure for all of us. The girls were absolutely buzzing with excitement, but truth be told, my own anticipation was just as palpable!

Welcome to Nashville: Our Initial Impressions

The journey from California to Nashville was filled with eager anticipation, especially for the kids who looked forward to discovering a completely new environment. Upon arrival, the distinctive Southern charm was immediately apparent. From the moment we stepped off the plane, a sense of warmth and hospitality enveloped us, a characteristic that would define our entire trip. The cityscape offered a fascinating blend of historic architecture and modern vibrancy, all set to the rhythm of country music subtly humming in the background. It truly felt like stepping into a different world, a delightful change of pace and scenery from our usual Californian routine.

A Culinary Journey Through Nashville

One of my biggest dreams for visiting a Southern state had always been to delve into its culinary landscape. Nashville, with its famed reputation for delicious food, certainly did not disappoint. My long-held desire to sample authentic Southern dishes became a reality, and it was everything I had hoped for and more! We eagerly sought out iconic flavors, starting with the legendary Nashville Hot Chicken – a spicy, crispy sensation that lived up to its hype. We also explored popular local eateries like Biscuit Love, known for its delectable brunch fare, and Five Daughters Bakery, a haven for sweet treats.

Navigating these popular spots with five children, including a baby, presented a unique challenge, especially given the famously long queues. Thankfully, the convenience of online ordering was a lifesaver! This allowed us to enjoy the city’s celebrated cuisine without spending precious family time waiting in lines. I particularly fell in love with the creamy, flavorful grits from Biscuit Love, a true Southern comfort food, and the delightful strawberry doughnuts from Five Daughters Bakery, which were an absolute revelation – soft, sweet, and perfectly frosted.

Beyond the established restaurants, one of the most surprising and enjoyable food experiences was our visit to the Nashville Farmer’s Market. Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon a grocery store within the market that carried African food items! It felt like finding a little piece of home in the heart of Tennessee. Seizing the opportunity, I purchased some fresh red snapper fish, ripe plantains, and other essential ingredients. Our hotel room, conveniently equipped with a fantastic kitchenette, became our impromptu culinary studio. It was incredibly fun and satisfying to cook a delicious meal of whole pan-fried fish, accompanied by perfectly fried plantains and a fresh avocado salsa. This unexpected cooking adventure truly became one of the highlights of our trip, offering a comforting taste of home amidst our exciting travels.

Not stopping at fish, I also whipped up some incredibly succulent fried chicken wings right in our tiny hotel kitchen. They were absolutely to die for! I still regret not capturing photographic evidence of their perfection. What was I thinking?

Another pleasant surprise was our hotel’s complimentary breakfast. It wasn’t just good; it was arguably the best hotel breakfast we’ve ever encountered! The spread was extensive and delicious, offering everything from fluffy waffles and golden toast to chewy bagels, made-to-order omelets, hearty oatmeal, savory sausages, and so much more. This daily morning feast provided a wonderful start to each day of our adventure, ensuring everyone in the family, especially the kids, had a satisfying meal before we headed out to explore.

Exploring Music City: Our Top Highlights

Nashville truly lived up to its “Music City” moniker, offering a diverse array of attractions that captivated our entire family. One of the most memorable experiences was taking a city tour with Old Town Trolleys. Our driver was a true character, whose witty commentary and humorous anecdotes brought Nashville’s history and landmarks to life. His lively presentation made the tour engaging and entertaining, even for the younger ones, providing a fantastic overview of the city’s key sights.

Throughout our visit, we were consistently impressed by the genuine friendliness of the people in Nashville. From casual interactions on the street to the exceptional service at our hotel, everyone we met seemed genuinely happy to engage. The hotel staff, in particular, felt more like extended family, always taking the time for a quick chat as we passed by. This relaxed and welcoming atmosphere contributed significantly to the overall enjoyment of our trip, making us feel right at home.

Broadway, the heart of downtown Nashville, was undeniably the happiest street I have ever witnessed. It’s an explosion of sound and color, alive with the energy of live bands spilling out of every bar. People danced and swayed to the music, while vibrant party buses, some even equipped with DJs, cruised by, packed with revelers singing and shouting with joy. The sheer exuberance and constant flow of music made it clear why Nashville is celebrated worldwide as Music City.

Strolling along the Music Walk of Fame, located adjacent to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, was an inspiring experience. We saw stars dedicated to legends who shaped the music industry, immersing ourselves in the rich heritage of American music. We initially planned to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, but the exceptionally long queue led us to pivot our plans, a common consideration when traveling with a large family. Instead, we directed our steps to the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, a decision we did not regret.

The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum (distinct from the Country Music Hall of Fame) proved to be an absolute hit, especially with the kids. It offered a unique, interactive experience where we could get hands-on with various instruments and even try our hand at making some music! This opportunity to play and experiment with different sounds was incredibly fun and educational, providing a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind the music.

Family Travel Tips for Nashville

Traveling with five children, including a baby, taught us a few valuable lessons about making the most of a family vacation in a bustling city like Nashville. Here are some of our top tips:

• Embrace Online Ordering: For popular restaurants like Biscuit Love or establishments known for long lines, online ordering or takeout is a game-changer. It saves significant time and keeps the little ones (and parents!) happier.
• Prioritize Accommodations with Kitchenettes: Having a well-equipped kitchenette in your hotel room was an absolute blessing. It allowed us to prepare simple meals, store snacks, and even cook fresh ingredients from the farmer’s market, saving money and catering to specific dietary needs.
• Seek Out Complimentary Breakfasts: A good complimentary breakfast can be a huge perk, especially for larger families. It fuels everyone up for a day of exploration without the added expense or hassle of finding a restaurant first thing in the morning.
• Mix Up Activities: Balance structured tours with interactive museums. The Musicians Hall of Fame, where kids could play instruments, was a fantastic way to engage them. Don’t be afraid to skip an overcrowded attraction for a less busy but equally enriching experience.
• Consider Transportation: While walking is great, options like the Old Town Trolleys are excellent for covering ground and getting an overview of the city without tiring out small feet. Private car services or rideshares can also be helpful for quick trips with a large group.
• Pack Smart: Always have snacks, drinks, and entertainment for downtime or unexpected waits. Comfort is key for kids, so pack accordingly for varying weather and activities.
