Here’s What’s Up: Five Things You Need to Know

Embracing the Journey: Reflections on Homeschooling, Simple Joys, and Spiritual Growth

A woman smiling, possibly in a wig, reflecting on her life experiences.

Life has a wonderful way of constantly evolving, presenting new adventures, unexpected delights, and profound moments of reflection. As I navigate the intricate tapestry of daily living, I find myself drawn to share some of the most significant threads that are currently weaving through my personal narrative. From the bustling energy of a homeschooling household to the quiet comfort of simple pleasures and the deep insights gleaned from spiritual exploration, each experience contributes to a richer understanding of this incredible journey we call life.

The Beautiful Chaos of Homeschooling: A Journey of Discovery and Connection

The homeschooling journey continues to unfold in remarkable ways, affirming our decision daily. What began as a venture into alternative education has blossomed into a deeply enriching experience for our children and our family as a whole. The progress our kids have made academically is truly inspiring; they’ve absorbed so much new knowledge across various subjects, often at their own pace and in ways that cater to their individual learning styles. This tailored approach allows for a deeper understanding and a genuine love for learning that might be harder to cultivate in a more traditional setting.

Beyond the academic milestones, one of the most cherished aspects has been the profound strengthening of our family bonds. Spending more quality time together, collaborating on projects, sharing meals, and simply existing in the same space for extended periods has forged connections that are invaluable. We’ve learned more about each other’s personalities, quirks, and passions, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding. This enhanced connection is a beautiful, perhaps unexpected, dividend of our homeschooling commitment, creating a resilient and loving family unit.

Of course, no journey is without its humorous challenges. The most amusing, yet persistent, issue we’ve encountered is the curious case of the disappearing pencil erasers! It seems we can never have enough pencils, or rather, enough erasers on those pencils. I honestly believed our household was well-stocked until the intense demands of daily lessons began. This tiny detail, however, serves as a delightful reminder of the constant engagement and active learning happening in our home. Despite the minor logistical quirks, I find myself growing increasingly comfortable and confident in this path. It is, without a doubt, a wonderfully chaotic and incredibly rewarding adventure. Savoring Simple Pleasures: The Irresistible Duo of Fresh Corn and Groundnuts

Amidst the daily routines, there’s immense joy to be found in the simplest of pleasures, especially when they involve food that evokes powerful memories and brings sheer delight. My current obsession revolves around fresh corn and groundnuts (peanuts). Last Friday, Mr. N arrived home with an impressively large bag of corn, a sight that immediately sparked anticipation. I wasted no time peeling the kernels and ushering them into the pot for boiling. The moment they were perfectly tender, still steaming hot, I began to devour them, and honestly, I haven’t looked back since. The sweetness, the texture, the warmth—it’s an experience that truly nourishes the soul.

The very next morning, Saturday brought another equally thrilling culinary discovery: fresh groundnuts that transported me straight back home with their authentic flavor. There’s something magical about food that tastes exactly as you remember it from childhood, a sensory bridge connecting you to cherished memories and a sense of belonging. This epic duo, fresh corn and groundnuts, has truly captured my heart (and my stomach!). Their presence is so comforting and satisfying that I almost don’t want to leave the house. My appreciation for these simple, yet profoundly delicious, treats is immense. Thank you, corn and groundnuts, for bringing such warmth and happiness into my days. And of course, a special thank you to Mr. N for bringing these delightful treasures home. *Imagines taking a huge, satisfying bite off a cob, eyes sparkling with joy.*

Nourishing the Spirit: A New Study Bible and “Uninvited” by Lysa Terkeurst

Beyond the physical nourishment, I’ve also been focused on spiritual growth and intellectual stimulation. I recently had the immense pleasure of receiving my very own study Bible, a tool I’ve longed for to deepen my understanding of scripture. Alongside it, a new book by the incredible Lysa Terkeurst arrived from Amazon: Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely. This particular title resonated with me immediately, drawing me in with its promise of profound insights into overcoming feelings of inadequacy and isolation.

My admiration for Lysa Terkeurst’s work stems from her consistent contributions to Proverbs 31 Ministries. I am a devoted reader of her devotional write-ups, finding immense comfort and wisdom in her words. What truly sets her apart is the raw sincerity and profound vulnerability she weaves into her posts. This authenticity creates a deeply relatable experience, making Proverbs 31 Ministries my go-to resource for a daily dose of spiritual encouragement every morning. In fact, I have their button prominently installed on my sidebar, ensuring easy access for anyone seeking similar inspiration.

Let’s delve a bit deeper into “Uninvited.” I’ve already read several of Lysa’s devotionals that tie into the book’s themes, and I can honestly say I relate to her insights on a deeply personal level. Have you ever found yourself wrestling with the nagging feeling that you might not be truly loved or genuinely cared for by others? Do you sometimes experience a profound sense of not quite ‘belonging,’ as if you’re on the periphery looking in? Lysa’s powerful message is a comforting balm for these insecurities: we can always choose to live feeling loved, regardless of what our circumstances or fleeting emotions might suggest. It’s about finding that unwavering sense of self-worth and belonging in a higher purpose. I am eagerly anticipating the moment the children are tucked into bed, allowing me to curl up on the couch and truly immerse myself in the pages of this transformative book. It feels like a much-needed conversation with a wise friend.

The Hair Chronicles: Wig Woes and the Allure of Braids

And now, for a somewhat lighter, yet equally significant, personal update: my hair! Oh, my hair! The wig you see me sporting in the picture above was a recent purchase, one I had high hopes for. However, despite my initial excitement, I’m starting to feel it looks a bit “jaga jaga” – a term that perfectly captures a sense of being untidy, disheveled, or just generally not quite right. I’ve found myself questioning if I’m wearing it correctly, or if this particular style simply isn’t meant for me. Perhaps it’s just one of those hairstyles that requires a specific knack I haven’t quite mastered yet.

Adding to my wig woes, this very afternoon presented a comedic, if slightly frustrating, incident. The wind decided to blow with an almost malevolent intensity, whipping at my wig as if determined to expose its temporary nature and, quite frankly, humiliate me! It felt as though some mischievous entity had sent the gusts specifically to dislodge my hairpiece. This unexpected battle with the elements served as the definitive sign. That’s it! The decision has been made. I am getting braids. Braids offer a sense of security, ease, and a low-maintenance elegance that sounds incredibly appealing right now. It’s time for a change, a style that can withstand even the most assertive of winds and make me feel effortlessly put-together.

Reflecting on Matthew 5: Being Salt and Light in the World

Beyond the everyday happenings and personal pursuits, there are moments when certain words transcend the mundane and speak directly to the soul. This morning, as I engaged in my daily devotional, the profound teachings from Matthew 5 resonated deeply within me, leaving an indelible mark on my spirit. These verses are a powerful call to action, an urgent reminder of our purpose and potential:

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

(Matthew 5, NLT)

The imagery of being the “salt of the earth” is incredibly potent. Salt preserves, enhances flavor, and purifies. To lose our saltiness implies a loss of influence, of impact, of our very essence. This message urged me to consider how I am preserving goodness and adding flavor to the lives around me, and to ensure my faith remains vibrant and effective. It’s a call to be an active agent for positive change, to make a difference in our communities and beyond, never allowing our spiritual fervor to diminish.

Equally compelling is the mandate to be the “light of the world.” A light is meant to illuminate, to guide, to dispel darkness. It’s not meant to be hidden or obscured. The passage makes it clear: we must *let* our light shine, and this act must be intentional. It’s not enough to simply exist and hope that our positive influence will passively manifest. We are called to consciously and deliberately place our ‘lamp on a stand,’ making our faith visible through our actions, our words, and our character. This means embracing a bold, unwavering Christian walk. It encourages us to be ‘aggressive’ in our generosity, actively seeking opportunities to give and share. It challenges us to be ‘aggressive’ in our Christ-likeness, striving to embody compassion, kindness, integrity, and love in every interaction. Living out our faith should be a proactive and deliberate choice, allowing our good deeds to reflect the glory of our Heavenly Father.

For me, this profound message translates into practical, everyday steps. I will begin by paying more intentional attention to my neighbors, extending genuine greetings even when they seem preoccupied or downcast. More importantly, I commit to genuinely caring for them, actively seeking ways to offer support, encouragement, and a listening ear. It’s through these small, consistent acts of kindness and connection that our light truly begins to shine, creating a ripple effect of positivity in the world.

Connecting and Sharing: Let’s Deepen Our Community!

I know I initially mentioned five key updates, but there’s a sixth, and perhaps the most important, thing: connecting with you, my readers! If you’ve made it this far, reading to the very end of my musings, then a huge “yay!” and a virtual hug are definitely in order. I truly value your time and engagement, and I’d love to take our relationship to the next level, fostering a vibrant and supportive community here.
