An Epic Family Road Trip: California to Minnesota and Back

Just a few months ago, in May, our family embarked on an unforgettable 30-hour road trip from the sunny landscapes of California all the way to Minnesota. Yes, you read that right – 30 hours! It was quite the adventure, especially traveling with four energetic children, all eight years old and under. Some might call us crazy, but having completed this journey and returned, I now feel like we can conquer any road trip, anywhere!

To make the long drive manageable and enjoyable for everyone, especially the little ones, we incorporated frequent stops. These breaks were essential for bathroom visits, stretching our legs, grabbing quick meals, and simply soaking in some of the incredibly stunning views along the way. Planning ahead was key; I packed a generously sized bag filled with an assortment of snacks, fresh fruits, and various mouth-pleasing treats, so keeping hunger at bay was never an issue.

My amazing husband, Mr. N, went the extra mile to set up mini-screens for the girls in the car. This allowed them to watch some of their favorite CDs, which proved to be a fantastic source of entertainment. It kept them engaged and minimized boredom, making the long hours fly by much more pleasantly.

Interestingly, after experiencing a 30-hour drive, a two-hour journey now feels incredibly short to me. While I wasn’t behind the wheel for the entire trip – my sweet hubby drove the whole way – the sheer scale of the journey has truly reset my perception of travel time. It was an experience that certainly built resilience!

One particular aspect I genuinely missed during our American road trip was the unique “road trip food” experience from my birth country, Cameroon. Back home, a significant highlight of any long drive is the opportunity to stop in charming small towns and indulge in delicious offerings from roadside vendors. Imagine sinking your teeth into roasted plum – not the American variety, but a rich, buttery African fruit – or savoring the epic taste of grilled fish, cooked to perfection over hot charcoal. There’s also savory Suya, sweet roasted plantains, fresh roasted corn, and an array of other mouthwatering goodies. This vibrant culinary scene truly adds another layer of joy to Cameroonian road trips, and I found myself longing for those distinctive treats.

However, what I absolutely adored about our American road trip were the breathtaking views! I was utterly captivated by the natural beauty unfolding before us – the majestic rocks, sprawling canyons, and towering mountains. Each vista served as a powerful reminder of the incredible Creator behind it all. I simply couldn’t get enough of these stunning landscapes. Are you, like me, a profound lover of nature?

I captured many videos during our journey with the intention of sharing them on my YouTube channel. Yet, I’ve hesitated, primarily because my channel is named “Precious Kitchen,” and road trip content doesn’t seem to align directly with cooking themes. I’d love to hear your thoughts: Would you enjoy seeing road trip vlogs on Precious Kitchen, or do you think I should consider creating a separate channel specifically for lifestyle content like this? Your feedback is incredibly valuable!

The primary reason for our grand road trip was to celebrate a monumental achievement: Mr. N’s graduation ceremony! My incredible husband has been diligently pursuing his bachelor’s degree, balancing full-time work and full-time studies, all while caring for our family. It was an incredibly challenging undertaking, but he did it, and I couldn’t be prouder of his dedication and perseverance. Witnessing him achieve this significant milestone was truly inspiring.

Embracing New Beginnings: Moving House (Again!)

Yes, you heard it right – we’ve moved house once more! This time, it’s a new home right here in Southern California. The process has been a whirlwind of emotions: immense excitement mixed with undeniable exhaustion. Moving is never an easy feat, but I’m incredibly grateful that I started packing well in advance, which certainly helped prevent feeling utterly overwhelmed at the very end. Despite the early preparation, the sheer amount of work involved remains significant.

As some of you might recall, we made a big move last year from Minnesota to California. Now, we’re settling into a different house within the same sunny state, and I am absolutely head-over-heels obsessed with our new residence! It feels like a fresh canvas, full of potential and new adventures.

My mind is constantly buzzing with countless decorating ideas. Sometimes, instead of diligently focusing on the practical tasks of unpacking and organizing our belongings, I find myself daydreaming and meticulously planning the decor. As a responsible adult, I know the logical approach is to finish unpacking first before diving into design. However, it’s been surprisingly challenging to resist envisioning all the wonderful ways I want to transform this house into our truly personalized home.

Perhaps my favorite feature of our new abode is the expansive backyard. At the moment, it’s mostly a blank slate of dirt, but in my mind, it’s brimming with dreams and visions of incredible transformations. I envision lush gardens, a vibrant play area for the kids, and a serene space for outdoor relaxation. I am deeply grateful for this home; it feels like a magnificent gift, and I am continuously in awe of how God consistently provides for our family’s needs and blessings.

You can catch glimpses of our new home and its potential in this recent video I shared on my YouTube channel. Come take a virtual tour and see what I mean!

From White Dreams to Black Reality: Our New Kitchen

Speaking of our brand new home, I must tell you about the kitchen! It’s definitely a departure from what I initially envisioned. For a long time, I’d dreamed of a pristine, bright white kitchen. However, our new home features a kitchen with stunning black cabinets, and to my surprise, I absolutely LOVE it! The finishing on these black cabinets is simply gorgeous, giving the space a sleek and modern feel.

While a white kitchen was my long-held desire, I’m wholeheartedly learning to embrace and appreciate the unique charm of my black cabinets. They bring a sophistication and warmth that I hadn’t anticipated. Perhaps in the distant future, I might consider painting them white, but for now, black is truly where it’s at, and I’m thoroughly enjoying this unexpected aesthetic. Get ready! The next time you see a new cooking video from me, it will be filmed in this spacious, beautiful black kitchen. I can barely wait to share it with you!

Three Years and Thriving: Our Homeschooling Journey

This past July 4th marked a truly special milestone for our family: three incredible years of homeschooling my children! I distinctly remember beginning our homeschooling journey on July 4th three years ago. I intentionally started in July, well before the traditional school year typically commences in September, with a simple philosophy: if it didn’t work out, I could always enroll the girls in conventional school by September. It was my practical safety net.

But here we are, three years later, not just continuing, but thriving and going strong! I am profoundly thankful to God for guiding us through this journey and for the success and joy we’ve found along the way. It’s been a continuous learning process for all of us, filled with both challenges and immense rewards.

What’s particularly coincidental and memorable is that our homeschooling anniversary falls on American Independence Day. I certainly didn’t plan it that way, but now, every time July 4th rolls around, it serves as a powerful and meaningful reminder of how far we’ve come in our unique homeschooling adventure. It’s a day of double celebration for our family – freedom and education!

A Fresh Look: Unveiling the Blog’s New Design

As you may have already noticed, the blog proudly sports a brand new look! I had to make the decision to update the old design primarily due to various technical reasons, including enhancing site performance, improving mobile responsiveness, and ensuring a more seamless user experience across all devices. I put in a lot of effort to ensure the new design would closely match the aesthetic and feel of the previous one, aiming for familiarity while introducing modern functionalities. While there are certainly some subtle differences, I hope you find the new layout intuitive and visually appealing.

Please take some time to explore the refreshed site. You’ll still find the convenient search button located on the right side of the blog, making it easy for you to quickly search for any specific recipe or to discover new culinary ideas that pique your interest. Your experience on the blog is very important to me, so if you happen to encounter any difficulties or have suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know. Your feedback helps me make this space even better for everyone.

The Power of Perseverance: Never Give Up!

In the midst of life’s many transitions and challenges, there’s one profound truth I hold onto and wish to impart to you: Never give up! Life will undoubtedly throw curveballs, presenting moments when you might feel knocked down, discouraged, or simply overwhelmed. You might fall, and that’s okay. What truly matters is that you don’t stay down there. Gather your strength, take a deep breath, WAKE UP, and keep moving forward. To truly navigate the complexities of life and achieve our aspirations, we must master the invaluable art of never, ever giving up on the right path.

Successful individuals are not those who have avoided failure. On the contrary, they are people who have learned the critical lesson of rising up again and again, even after countless setbacks. Their journey is defined not by the absence of falls, but by the consistent courage to get back on their feet.

Countless times throughout my journey with this blog, I’ve felt the urge to throw in the towel, to simply give up. Yet, time and again, I find myself drawn back, compelled to continue sharing and creating. It truly feels like a miracle that I get to do this work, to connect with all of you. But I want you to understand that what you see here, this evolving space, is a direct result of that steadfast commitment to never giving up. I sincerely hope this inspires you to relentlessly pursue your own dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem. Remember, failures and setbacks are not roadblocks; they are integral and necessary components of your unique journey. They possess the power to make you stronger, wiser, and more resilient – if only you allow them to.

The Beautiful Tapestry of Motherhood

My dear friends, this past season has been a vivid illustration of me simply striving to be the best mama I can be, dedicating every day to loving these precious kiddos the Lord has graciously entrusted into my hands. Motherhood is a journey of constant learning, boundless love, and beautiful chaos.

This summer was particularly memorable. My older girls had the fantastic opportunity to attend kids’ camp at our church. They returned absolutely buzzing with excitement, sharing countless stories, and demonstrating how much they learned and grew during their time there. I am so incredibly glad they were able to participate in such a enriching experience.

And speaking of my wonderful girls, Yoyo continues to be an absolutely amazing big sister, always looking out for her younger siblings with such tenderness and care.

My older girls have truly mastered the art of posing for pictures! Their creativity and confidence shine through in every shot, making our family photo sessions even more delightful.

One of our favorite family outings this summer was berry picking. It was an absolute blast, a truly wholesome and joyful experience that we all cherished.
