It’s a pleasure to finally sit down with you, Penjo. Your birth name is Peter Njodzeka. Could you share the fascinating origin behind the iconic name, ‘Penjo Baba’?

Thank you for having me. The name ‘Penjo’ is actually a blend derived from my two given names. ‘Pe’ comes from Peter, and ‘Njo’ is taken from Njodzeka, forming ‘Pe-Njo’. As for ‘Baba,’ that’s a title I earned during my time in Nigeria in 2012. I was working at the Miss University Africa competition, tirelessly capturing moments every single day. The Nigerians, impressed by the consistent quality and professionalism of my work, developed a deep respect for me and affectionately began calling me ‘Baba,’ a term of respect and endearment in their culture. It stuck, and now it’s intrinsically linked to my identity as a photographer.

A Deep-Rooted Passion: From ICT to Iconic Photographer

Your dedication to your craft is palpable. What ignited this profound love for photography, especially given your initial path?

It’s interesting because, initially, photography or cinematography wasn’t even on my radar. My background was in ICT. However, destiny took a turn in 2005 when I encountered a US-based NGO called Engineers Without Borders. After researching their impactful work, I reached out to them, and we eventually forged a partnership, collaborating on a vital water project in Nkuv, Cameroon. This experience then led me to another incredible US-based NGO, Thirst Relief International. During my community service with them, a crucial part of my role involved submitting photographs to complement my monthly reports. The only catch? I didn’t own a camera at the time. So, I would frequently borrow an analog camera from a friend, painstakingly capturing images that documented our progress and impact. Jim Hicks, the chairperson of Thirst Relief International and an accomplished photographer himself, was incredibly impressed by my nascent photographic eye and the stories my pictures told. His encouragement and appreciation were pivotal. It was through this organic process that my interest in photography truly blossomed. I began devouring every resource I could find, diligently studying techniques to hone my raw talent. Eventually, I managed to save enough money to invest in my first professional camera, marking the official birth of my brand, ‘Penjo Entertainment.’

Tell us more about ‘Penjo Entertainment.’ What kind of work thrives under this dynamic brand?

Penjo Entertainment is far more than just a photography studio; it’s a comprehensive production house that was founded in 2007, dedicated to all facets of entertainment and showbiz. Under this umbrella, we engage in a wide array of creative endeavors, including movie production, conceptualizing and executing music video shoots, offering top-tier professional photography services, organizing and hosting engaging talent shows, and orchestrating glamorous beauty and fashion shows. Our goal is to be a one-stop destination for high-quality entertainment production, fostering talent, and elevating standards within the industry.

Overcoming Obstacles: The Journey of a Self-Taught Visionary

Every groundbreaking journey faces its share of hurdles. What were some of the significant challenges you encountered at the beginning of your career?

The initial phase of my career was anything but easy. I was largely self-taught, relying heavily on my own initiative and the invaluable resources available online. I’m incredibly grateful for the internet tutorials that became my virtual mentors, guiding me through the complexities of photography and cinematography. They truly helped me develop my skills from the ground up. Today, while I’ve overcome many technical challenges, my primary hurdle remains marketing my diverse body of work effectively. Reaching wider audiences and consistently showcasing the quality and breadth of Penjo Entertainment’s offerings is an ongoing effort that demands creativity and strategic thinking.

From Wannabe Actor to Entrepreneur: The “Peace Offering” Anecdote

It’s quite intriguing to witness your evolution from a budding actor to the accomplished entrepreneur you are today. Could you recount your memorable role in the Cameroonian/Nigerian movie, ‘Peace Offering’?

(Laughs heartily) Ah, ‘Peace Offering’! Those were truly unforgettable days, filled with pure passion but little direction. My heart’s true calling was always behind the camera, but at that specific time, there was a surplus of talented individuals occupying those roles. So, I decided to venture into acting, just to experience another side of the industry. I found myself cast as one of the village warriors, a minor but amusing role. To this day, when I rewatch that movie, I can’t help but burst into laughter at my own performance! It was an incredibly fun and valuable experience, even if acting wasn’t my ultimate path.

That’s a hilarious anecdote! Speaking of your work, I’ve heard whispers that you now possess some of the finest cameras for movie production in the country. Is that a claim you would stand by?

My unwavering passion for my work is intrinsically linked to a relentless pursuit of the highest quality in everything I undertake. This commitment is precisely why I have consistently invested in top-tier professional cameras for almost eight years, ever since Penjo Entertainment came into existence. I firmly believe that building a distinguished brand requires significant sacrifices and continuous investment before one can truly stand out in a competitive landscape. I am always striving forward, dedicated to doing the absolute best I can with the best available tools, ensuring that Penjo Entertainment consistently delivers exceptional results.

Every Project a Masterpiece: The Unifying Thread of Passion

You’ve lent your expertise to a diverse range of projects, including short films, documentaries, and fashion shows. Do you have a particular favorite among them?

For me, every single project I undertake holds a special place and is, in its own way, my best. This isn’t just a sentiment; it stems from the immense passion I pour into each one. What truly unifies all these diverse projects is their underlying purpose: the potential to impact and change people’s lives, whether through shedding light on important issues in a documentary, inspiring through fashion, or entertaining with a short film. Because of this profound connection to making a difference, I genuinely view all my projects as equally significant and fulfilling.

Your commitment to philanthropic work appears boundless. What drives this deep-seated passion for giving back?

While photography and cinematography are essential for paying the bills and sustaining Penjo Entertainment, it is truly my charity work that brings profound satisfaction to my heart. Philanthropy is where my journey began, working with NGOs focused on community development. That experience instilled in me an enduring desire to continuously give back to the community that has supported me. It’s a way for me to remain grounded and to actively contribute to the well-being and upliftment of others, which I find incredibly rewarding.

A Legacy in the Making: Inspiring the Next Generation

I recently saw some heartwarming photos on Facebook of your sons playfully taking pictures with your cameras. Would you like them to follow in your footsteps and pursue photography?

At this stage, my sons are still quite young, and their interest in my cameras seems to stem from a natural curiosity and an affection for what they see me doing. Sometimes they simply pick up my cameras and start experimenting, which is wonderful to witness. I wouldn’t presume to decide their career paths for them; that’s a choice they must make independently. However, I absolutely love seeing them observe and appreciate my work. On a different note, if I were ever blessed with a daughter, I would wholeheartedly encourage her to pursue photography or cinematography. It’s an arena that presents significant challenges for women, particularly in Africa, but I firmly believe that with passion, dedication, and support, they can achieve immense success in this line of work and truly make their mark.

For those aspiring to emulate your success and impact, what invaluable advice would you offer?

My advice to anyone aspiring to achieve greatness, especially in a creative field, is to set their goals extraordinarily high and relentlessly work towards them every single day, as if no other dreams exist. Unwavering focus and diligent hard work are undeniably crucial foundations for success. However, there are qualities that I believe are even more paramount and must come first: humility, genuine respect for others and your craft, unwavering consistency in your efforts, and above all, profound love for what you do. These virtues will not only propel you forward but also sustain you through challenges and enrich your journey.

Where do you envision Penjo Baba and Penjo Entertainment five years from now?

In the next five years, I foresee Penjo Entertainment expanding significantly, acquiring even more advanced and professional equipment to further elevate the quality and scope of our productions. My commitment to continuous improvement in technology is unwavering. Simultaneously, I am equally dedicated to deepening my involvement in community betterment. I will continue to actively improve communities through a combination of impactful charity initiatives and innovative entertainment projects, using my platform to create both artistic value and tangible positive change.

What are your personal hobbies outside of your demanding professional life?

I must confess, I am absolutely addicted to cameras! Beyond that, I truly enjoy traveling, experiencing new places and cultures. Of course, working hard is also something I genuinely love, and at the end of a productive day, there’s nothing quite like enjoying a good meal.

And speaking of good meals, what’s your all-time favorite dish?

Without a doubt, Ndole and Yam. It’s a classic and always satisfying.
