My Unforgettable Third Pregnancy Journey: Navigating Cravings, Toddler Chaos, and the Long Wait
Hello, cherished readers and fellow travelers on this incredible journey called life! You know how much I adore sharing my stories and experiences here on the blog, especially those deeply personal moments that shape us. We’ve journeyed through the bliss of my first pregnancy, relished the ease of a wonderful second trimester, and even commiserated over the challenges of an annoying third trimester. Together, we faced the profound grief of my painful miscarriage and celebrated the miraculous arrival of my second daughter, born through the power of prayer. Each chapter has been unique, filled with lessons and love. Now, it’s time to open up about my latest adventure: my third pregnancy journey – an experience that was as intriguing and interesting as it was, at times, downright frustrating.
The Early Days: Juggling Morning Sickness and Toddler Triumphs
Embarking on a new pregnancy is always a mix of excitement and apprehension, but this time, the early weeks brought an unprecedented level of challenge. With two energetic toddlers already ruling our home, the onset of morning sickness felt like a cruel cosmic joke. Those first few months were a blur of intense nausea, overwhelming fatigue, and a constant battle to keep my spirits up while my little ones demanded unwavering attention.
Some days, the struggle was so immense that I found myself retreating to my room, leaving my toddlers to their own devices in theirs. I would lie there, an invisible prisoner of my own body, listening to their joyous shouts and the inevitable sounds of utter chaos unfolding. Their jubilation was palpable, a testament to their newfound freedom to explore, to create, and, of course, to scatter everything within reach. Toys, books, clothes – no item was safe from their creative destruction. The guilt would gnaw at me, yet the sheer physical inability to intervene was even stronger. Afterwards, mustering every ounce of strength, I would embark on the Sisyphean task of cleaning up their room, only to prepare for the next session of massive, joyful destruction.

I sought help for the relentless morning sickness, and my midwife prescribed medication designed to curb the persistent vomiting. While it did offer some relief on that front, it introduced a new set of debilitating problems. Severe headaches became my constant companion, pounding behind my eyes, making it difficult to focus or even think clearly. Dizziness washed over me frequently, turning simple movements into perilous endeavors. It felt like a classic case of solving one problem only to create two more serious ones, a frustrating trade-off that left me feeling even more drained and disheartened. The relief from nausea came at the steep cost of feeling perpetually unwell, a dilemma that gnawed at my patience and tested my resolve.
A Culinary Quest: Unraveling the Mystery of Pregnancy Cravings
Beyond the physical discomfort, this pregnancy introduced me to the peculiar and often irrational world of intense cravings. These weren’t just simple desires; they were profound, specific yearnings that consumed my thoughts. One particular craving stands out with vivid clarity: I desperately wanted the exact cornchaff (a delicious corn and beans porridge) my aunt had served us during a visit to Cameroon, just before we relocated. I didn’t want something similar, or a dish cooked in a different pot by someone else. Oh no, it had to be that exact one, with its unique blend of spices and comforting texture, bringing back fond memories of family and home. The impossibility of replicating that exact dish, hundreds of miles away, was a source of genuine, albeit humorous, anguish.

Another inexplicable craving was for Nigerian Jollof Rice that had been slightly burnt in the cooking process. Yes, you read that right – the slightly crispy, smoky bottom layer that often gets scraped off. The thought alone would make my mouth water. The craving was so intense that I almost considered striking up a friendship with a random Nigerian lady, solely for the purpose of convincing her to cook me a pot of perfectly burnt Jollof. The absurdity of it all was not lost on me, even in my hormonally charged state, but the desire was overwhelmingly real.
And then there was the infamous hamburger incident. One day, the craving for a specific hamburger was so overwhelming that my wonderful husband, Mr. N, went out to get it for me. My anticipation was immense. However, instead of coming straight home, he decided to do some shopping first. By the time he returned, the hamburger, my sacred, longed-for hamburger, was cold. The disappointment was immediate and disproportionate. I recall almost bursting into tears, the sudden shift from eager anticipation to profound culinary letdown hitting me with the force of an emotional tsunami. Such are the magnified emotions during pregnancy, turning a minor inconvenience into a moment of dramatic despair.

A Necessary Pause: Prioritizing Wellness Over the Blog
The cumulative effect of managing persistent nausea, navigating intense cravings, and raising two vibrant toddlers while pregnant eventually took its toll. There came a point when I realized something had to give. As much as I cherish this space and connecting with all of you, maintaining my blogging schedule became an unsustainable burden. The decision to put blogging on hold was not an easy one, but it was a crucial act of self-preservation. My energy reserves were completely depleted, and attempting to keep up with content creation while battling physical discomfort and the demands of my family was simply too much. It was a period where prioritizing my health, my baby’s well-being, and my existing children became the sole focus, reminding me of the delicate balance mothers constantly strive to maintain.

The Long Wait: Due Date Anticipation and the Art of Patience
As the months progressed, the excitement for our new arrival grew, bringing with it the familiar nesting instincts and meticulous preparations. I had always delivered my babies before their due dates in the past, a pattern that led me to confidently believe this pregnancy would be no exception. Boy, was I ever wrong! With a due date of January 1st, I meticulously prepared everything – from the nursery setup to packing and repacking my hospital bags countless times. I was convinced our baby would make an appearance by December 31st, making for a truly memorable New Year’s Eve. Yet, New Year’s Day came and went, with not a single dramatic labor contraction in sight. The due date passed, ushering in a new phase of intense frustration and growing discomfort. The waiting game became a test of patience I was clearly failing. The well-meaning but incessant calls from friends and family, all asking if the baby had arrived, only served to amplify my irritation, making me feel even more scrutinized and overdue.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of False Labors
To compound the frustration of waiting, I experienced two instances of false labor, each visit to the hospital ending in crushing disappointment. The first time, I was convinced my waters had broken, just as they had during my first labor experience. Rushing to the hospital, filled with a mix of hope and anxiety, I underwent several hours of monitoring and numerous tests. The medical staff were thorough, but ultimately, they delivered the news: it was a false alarm. Being sent home after such intense anticipation was emotionally exhausting, a silent sigh escaping my lips as I left the hospital with my hopes dashed, still pregnant.
The second false alarm is almost a blur now, but I remember the growing sense of weariness and skepticism. I can’t even recall the specific symptoms that prompted that second trip, but it was another cycle of hope, examination, and the inevitable pronouncement that it wasn’t real labor. Returning home, my “humongous-looking tummy” felt heavier than ever, laden with both the baby and the weight of my emotional fatigue. Each false start chipped away at my dwindling patience, making the wait even more arduous.
The Grand Finale: A Post-Due Date Arrival and New Beginnings
After what felt like an eternity, our precious baby finally decided to grace us with her presence, arriving a joyous three days after her official due date. The relief and overwhelming love that washed over me in that moment were indescribable, instantly overshadowing all the preceding discomfort and frustration. This birth, however, was particularly unique for me, as it unfolded in America, a vastly different experience from my previous births “at home.” The medical protocols, the hospital environment, the support systems, and even cultural expectations surrounding childbirth presented a new landscape to navigate. This contrast alone provides a fascinating glimpse into the diverse approaches to welcoming new life into the world, and it’s an experience I am eager to delve into with you all in my next pregnancy diary installment.
Until then, stay sweet, embrace your own unique journeys, and know that every chapter, no matter how challenging, holds invaluable experiences!
